Bariatric Surgery Gives Husband and Father Hope for the Future
Prior to the surgery, Jim Bleemer was overweight and facing various health problems such as pre-diabetes, hypertension, and mobility issues. Concerned about his future and wanting to be there for his family, he decided to explore weight-loss surgery options.
Jim researched and found Dr. Alexander Abkin, a bariatric surgeon at JFK University Medical Center. Impressed by Dr. Abkin’s direct and honest approach, Jim chose to undergo a laparoscopic minimally invasive sleeve gastrectomy. This procedure involved removing about 70 percent of his stomach, reducing hunger sensations and promoting portion control.
Before the surgery, Jim went through the necessary evaluations, including consultations with a nutritionist and psychologist. On January 17, 2022, he had his surgery and experienced a successful outcome. He lost 43 pounds in the first month and, over a year later, his weight had dropped to 196 pounds. Jim highlights the positive impact the surgery had on his health and his ability to fit into clothes he wore in high school.
Dr. Abkin emphasizes that the surgery not only helped Jim lose weight but also improved his overall health. Jim no longer has diabetes, sleep apnea, or acid reflux, and his blood pressure is normal. Dr. Abkin stresses that bariatric surgery is a proven permanent solution for morbid obesity, contrasting it with quick-fix remedies that often come with serious side effects. He encourages individuals struggling with obesity to consult a bariatric surgeon sooner rather than later to achieve the healthier body they deserve.
